| The Brain Awareness Week campaign, launched in 1996, has united the Society for Neuroscience with The Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and a coalition of over 1,200 science, advocacy, and other health organizations that share an interest in elevating public awareness of brain and nervous system research.
During the week-long educational blitz, Society
members sponsor a variety of educational activities for the general
public including lectures, lab tours, classroom visits, and exhibits
across North America to demonstrate the importance of basic neuroscience
research to the health and well-being of the American public. See
"Helping Superman
To Walk and Other Miracles on the Horizon Through Brain Research,"
for some of the medical miracles brewing in neuroscience research
today!
Society participation is essential for taking the
message to the public about the importance of neuroscience research.
In addition to helping to put neuroscience in the public eye, participating
institutions benefit on many levels--from publicity and community
exposure to forging alliances with patient advocacy groups and other
organizations with similar interests. It is for this reason that
many neuroscience departments and SfN chapters have made BAW an
annual event for their institutions--some even participate in community
outreach throughout the year. (See "What
are people saying?" for testimonials from participating
society members.)
