Neuroscience 2008 advance member registration is now open. Before registering online, review our tips for optimizing browser performance. Members should have member ID numbers and passwords ready. You must register for Neuroscience 2008 before booking a hotel room. To qualify for member rates, apply for membership by September 12 or renew online before registering.

Make Your Voice Heard: SfN Launches New Advocacy Network
You play a critical role in the fight to increase research funding and promote science issues. SfN is launching an exciting new effort to engage members in science advocacy. As a part of the SfN Advocacy Network, you will receive periodic e-mail updates on issues important to neuroscience, and SfN will call upon you when your legislator’s vote is crucial to our advocacy strategy. Join the new network to stay informed on federal and state issues that affect your research and take action to support science and science funding.
Brain Chemical Shown to Induce Both Desire and Dread
The chemical dopamine induces both desire and dread, according to new animal research in the July 9 issue of The Journal of Neuroscience. Although dopamine is well known to motivate animals and people to seek positive rewards, the study indicates that it also can promote negative feelings like fear. View press release.
Society for Neuroscience 2008 Election Results
The Society congratulates its newly elected SfN officers and councilors. The incoming officers and councilors will begin their terms at Neuroscience 2008 in Washington, DC. View election results.
Deadlines Approaching for Award Nominations
The Swartz Prize for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience honors contributions to theoretical or computational neuroscience. The prize, awarded for the first time this year, includes $25,000. Nominations must be made or endorsed by a SfN member and are due July 28.
SfN is still accepting nominations for the Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award, which includes a $5,000 prize. The award recognizes a neuroscientist with outstanding career achievements who has significantly promoted the professional advancement of women. The new deadline is August 18.
SfN’s Research Awards for Innovation in Neuroscience was established to honor imaginative research that advance novel ideas and have potential to lead to significant breakthroughs in the understanding of the brain and nervous system and related diseases. The awards are presented to three recipients whose institutions each receive $25,000. An SfN member must make or endorse nominations, due September 8.
