Education & Advocacy

Disease-Causing Proteins
Searching for the cause of a rare group of brain diseases revolutionized what scientists know about brain proteins. A recent BrainFacts.org article describes the surprisingly common — and complex — ways in which proteins can act to cause harm.

Act Now to Support Increased Funding for NIH and NSF
Write to your legislators and ask them to reverse sequestration and increase the budgets of NIH and NSF — it only takes two minutes. In the coming weeks, congressional appropriators, who are ultimately responsible for allocating money in the federal budget to different agencies, will be deciding the final dollar amount for the NIH and NSF budgets. Scientists must continue to speak up to protect the budgets of NIH and NSF in FY2014.

Support Scientists in Milan Affected by Animal Rights Extremism
On April 20, a group of animal rights extremists invaded laboratories at the University of Milan, illegally removing about 100 animals and destroying numerous highly valuable research projects. The Basel Declaration Society is organizing a call for solidarity with scientists in Milan affected by animal rights extremism. Add your name in support.

'Tackling Bias: Best Practices for Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Faculty' Webinar
What are the challenges for recruiting women faculty and faculty from diverse backgrounds? What resources are available to use at my institution? Research suggests that implicit bias, often subtle and based on cultural stereotypes, influences the recruitment, promotion, and retention of women faculty in higher education. Sign up for the June 6 Department Chair Training to Increase Women in Neuroscience (IWiN) webinar for answers. Visit SfN.org to learn more about the webinar and implicit bias.

Do You Belong to an Innovative Neuroscience Program or Department?
The Neuroscience Program-of-the-Year Award recognizes accomplishments of neuroscience departments or programs for excellence in educating neuroscientists and providing innovative models of teaching and learning. One undergraduate and one graduate/postdoctoral Institutional Program member will receive a $1,000 award and be honored at the Neuroscience Departments and Programs reception at Neuroscience 2013. Winning programs will also be featured on SfN.org. For more information, visit SfN.org or email ndp@sfn.org. Applications are due July 1.
